Title I, Part A

In accordance with ESSA Sec. 1114 Schoolwide Programs and Sec. 1115 Targeted Assistance Schools, Leader in Me® is a whole-school transformation process based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People®. Implementation of Leader in Me (LiM) begins with the training of the full staff, to increase adult social and emotional competency and SEL teaching readiness. Leader in Me empowers educators with core paradigms and effective practices that drive measurable results in leadership, culture, and academics.

In Years 1–3, Core Trainings help establish a sustainable social-emotional learning (SEL) culture which meets the needs of the whole person, apply powerful leadership principles to unleash the greatness in staff and students, and connect and contribute to a global community of high-performing schools. The impact of LiM is backed by over 100 independent academic research studies and the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning’s (CASEL) designation as a CASEL SELect Program. Successful implementation of the Leader in Me Core equips schools to achieve great results and become Lighthouse certified.

Once the foundation of Leader in Me has been established over the first three years of implementation, data is used to determine areas of focus to be addressed through Impact Journeys. Areas of focus include topics such as: (a) Academics I: Closing the Achievement Gap, (b) Academics II: Achieving Team Proficiency Goals, (c) Empowering Instruction: Nurturing a “We Learn” Culture, (d) Family Engagement: The Learning Team Approach, (e) 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families®, and (f) Equity in Education: From the Inside Out. Schools that demonstrate significant improvement in areas targeted through Impact Journeys can qualify for distinctions.
Instructional staff learn to implement Leader in Me curriculum and have access to either print or digital teacher guides. Students learn the 7 Habits and have opportunities to practice those habits through the Student Leadership Guide, interactions with peers, staff, and community members, student-led events, and student leadership roles. Families are provided with resources, either print or digital access, so the practice and mastery of the 7 Habits can reach beyond the academic environment and into the home and family setting.

As evidenced by over 100 independent research studies, outcomes of Leader in Me implementation include:

  • Positive impact on student behavior.
  • Improved academic results.
  • Preparation and support of SEL teachers.
  • Promotion of student leadership.
  • Increased student engagement.
  • Creation of a supportive school environment.
  • Positive impact on student attendance.

Through the Measurable Results Assessment (MRA), data is collected from staff, students, and parents to measure the impact of Leader in Me on the areas of leadership, culture, and academics. Specific measures include:

1. Leadership Measures:
